Letter from Global Volunteers

Now I know what I should really pack in my carry-on!! I also want to buy one of those new baby thermometers that you just pass over an infant or child's forehead and it gives you a reading. When I was there in December they desperately needed covers for their ear thermometers so this thermometer would take care of the needed for covers... Let me know if you would like to help buy bottles!! The Playtex shouldn't be too expensive. But the Haberman Feeder is about $25 a bottle! YIKES! Sweet Ionela is still awaiting surgery for her cleft palate so I would love to take a few of these too!

Dear Terri,
I'm sure you are starting to make preparations for your upcoming service program in Romania, and I just received some information from our hosts that I want to share with you.
I have received many requests from volunteers preparing to serve in Romania regarding special donations requests. As always, whenever our hosts at the Barlad schools or Tutova Clinic have special needs, we ask that they let us know so that we can pass the request on to upcoming teams. Donations are certainly not required of volunteers, but where there are special needs, I want to make sure that you are aware!
The Romanian Health Department is imposing new restrictions on the use of baby bottles, which now means that Dr Delia and the staff at the Failure to Thrive Clinic must make arrangements so that used bottles never meet unused bottles. Dr Delia has determined that the best way to cope with this new policy is to use the type of baby bottles that have disposable plastic liners. They will, of course, need lots of these to keep the babies fed, so they have asked that upcoming volunteers consider this need for disposable liners, and the plastic bottles and nipples that go with them, when contemplating items to donate. Liners might fit only specific brands of bottles, so we suggest that you consider products in this line: http://www.playtexbaby.com/Products/Bottles/DropIns.aspx
One other special request is a little more unique. There are often babies/children at the clinic with cleft paletes or cleft lips. This makes bottle feeding them very difficult and time consuming. We have learned that there are special bottles made for babies with this condition, although I'm not sure how widely available or costly they are. One type that I have been made aware of is the Haberman Feeder with appears similar to a normal baby bottle, but has a one-way valve that prevents flooding and overwhelming the baby. If you are familiar with these or other types of feeders, they would be greatly appreciated.
Again, I need to reiterate that these requests are certainly not necessary, but if you were hoping to bring something to donate, these items would be especially useful. As always, please let me know if you have any questions as you continue to prepare.
Regards,
Ellen Liming, Assistant to Director of International Operations

Fundraiser Idea

Tuesday, April 28 we are having an Appalachian Day celebration at school. I am going to have an area there for a game.. maybe called "Gathering Eggs" -- kinda goes with the them of self-sufficiency in the mountains.. Anyway here is the idea:

Gathering Eggs

I bought around 400 pre-filled eggs at Walmart this afternoon (clearanced to $1.20 for 12 -- $58.10 with tax). I will place these eggs in a HUGE box with a cover on it. Kids will pay $1.00 to "gather" an egg. Prizes are the dinky, el cheapo prizes that were already in the egg BUT also there will be several eggs with FREE SLUSHY coupons (we sell slushies at school for $1.00 so that is an even trade) and a few eggs will hold $5 bills! What do ya think?? Think that will entice the kiddos to play?? This is one of those everyone wins games!! LOL If the kids buy all 400 eggs I still should make a nice profit to help with the Romania trip...

ALSO.. I got a call from a friend with the Pigeon Forge Rotary Club.. I will be doing a presentation for them on June 3 and they will take up money afterwards!! YIPEE!!

Keep praying for me!

Down to the Wire

MARIA SAYS: PLEASE PLEASE SEND "MAMA TERRI" BACK TO US!

I must love living on the edge! Monday my payment is due to Global Volunteers and I am about $1900 short in fundraising.. I have a couple of big fundraisers in the works but they can't happen until May and GV requires your money 75 days before you depart. Monday, April 20 is the start of my 75 day countdown!! YIPEE! I am praying non-stop today that a big donor will come forward OR that all my friends will believe me that if we each donate $5 to the cause of our choice we REALLY can make a difference!!

FUNDRAISING & Other Info

I have begun fundraising again! YIPEE!! I have booked my next volunteer trip through Global Volunteers for Romania!! I will be arriving in Romania on July 4th and departing on August 8! I am so excited! A little nervous to be leaving Emily for 5 weeks during the summer when she doesn't have school to occupy her but she will have several vacations, cheer camp, etc to keep her busy. I think my family finally realized how serious I am about volunteering when I scheduled my trip during our annual family beach trip! I love the beach but I have to say I love volunteering with the babies more!

I sent out emails today to several friends asking for them to pass the email on.. I hope to reach as many people as possible. Not only to raise money but also to raise awareness of the poverty in this world around us!

Two weekends ago I spoke at my parents' church during both services and raised almost $600! I also realized that as much as I hate to ask for money I LOVED sharing about "my" babies!

A sweet friend, Caroline, has finished up a long stay at the Clinic. She is heading back to the States today. Her blog address is www.tutovababies.blogspot.com Visit it to see updates on the sweet kiddos! Ema and Marius are so precious with there big front teeth!! I am truly indebted to her for keeping me up-to-date on the babies (and am praying someone else steps up to the plate and starts a daily blog for those of us waiting anxiously at home for updates!!).

I also added "adsense" to my blog.. yes it is advertising BUT they will send me a check depending on how many people click the ads!! The money earned from the clicks will go right back into my Tutova fund!! :-) Click often and click happy!

Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, and money!! I am so blessed and hope to pass on the blessings to the babies of Tutova Clinic!!
